Why do I coach CrossFit?

I coach CrossFit because it works for me. I’ve had the privilege to experience and see firsthand its benefits. I’ve used the methodology for the last twelve years and coached it for the last nine.  Functional movements are necessary for everyone in everyday life and I’ve seen how a lack of functional movement at any age prohibits people in their everyday life. I want to help people live longer move better so they can live their life to the fullest.

Why do I coach CrossFit?

I have been an exercise enthusiast for over 20 years with experiences including gymnastics training, competitive/non-competitive swimming, indoor rock climbing, endurance running, weight training, CrossFit, boxing, and multiple other physical activities. In 2009, I discovered CrossFit and immediately became enamored by its diversity and constantly varied training regimen.  I began my professional interest in sports education, coaching under the tutelage of Master Trainer Leonard Pace, a thirty-year veteran of the physical fitness industry.  After that, I moved to Savannah and brought my experiences and training to add to the Shear Force collective; a diverse community of experiences and age groups with a common goal of physical/educational advancement, achievement, and continued excellence.

Why do I coach CrossFit?

As a child, I was not allowed to participate in any sports or physical activity —beyond lifting books— so academic success became my main priority. This inactivity resulted in obesity during my teenage years. In college, I lost over 40 pounds walking everywhere; in law school, I completed my first marathon. After a nearly fatal autoimmune disease in 2010, I became obese again.

I began my CrossFit journey in 2013 at nearly 200 pounds, but the coaches never made me feel like I couldn’t do CrossFit. Supportive coaches helped me through countless PRs —from my first 8-inch box step-up to my first bar muscle-up. All of these experiences inspired me to want to coach. Helping others achieve their fitness goals motivates me to want to be a better coach.  My own journey reminds me that everyone’s journey is different, but that we all share our love of this sport in community.
